20 Questions Book Tag

I wasn’t tagged in this but I saw it on For Book’s Sake and thought it would be fun to fill in so here we go…

1 – How many books are too many books in a series?
I get overwhelmed by long series so I would say for me personally, a trilogy is manageable. That way, I still remember the characters, what’s happening and the overall arc of the storyline doesn’t get lost on me.

2 – How do you feel about cliffhangers?
I don’t mind them. If I get to the end of the book and there’s a cliffhanger, it makes me want to read the sequel but if I loved the book, I’m likely to do that anyway.

3 – Hardback or Paperback?
I like the way hardbacks look and feed but paperbacks are just way more practical.

4 – Favourite book?
I hate this question, it’s impossible to pick! Red, White and Royal Blue, To Kill A Mockingbird, Cemetery Boys, A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, SLAY, Legendary (in the Caraval series).

5 – Least favourite book?
Anything horror, gore, violent thriller. Naming and shaming, I’ll say The Binding and Together.

6 – Love triangles, yes or no?
I’m gonna say no, I think that’s the romantic in me talking. However, it does work really well in Felix Ever After.

7 – The most recent book you just couldn’t finish?
I am really bad at DNF’ing books, I just don’t do it. The most recent book I read that I wish I had not was Together by Julie Cohen. I had to read it for a book club and I wasn’t in the mood anyway. It’s a romance and I found I just didn’t care about any of it but I pushed through and then I got to the ending and wanted to throw the book out the window. So yeah, I don’t recommend that one.

8 – A book you’re currently reading?
The Fated Sky by Mary Robinette Kowal. It is the second in the Lady Astronaut series, after The Calculating Stars and I am very much enjoying it so far. It follows a number of characters on a mission to Mars, which with all the talk of Mars at the moment, makes it even more interesting.

9 – Last book you recommended to someone?
I’m always recommending books, it’s what bookworms do. But the last one I recommended was probably Daughter of the Pirate King and then the person in question DNFed it and broke my heart.
I absolutely adore this duology. I listened to them on audiobook and loved them so much I asked for physical copies last Christmas so I can re-read them. Alosa is a kick-ass pirate Captain with a mostly female crew who pretends to be captured in order to be on board an enemy ship and search for the missing part of an ancient treasure map. One thing she doesn’t count on however, is the unfairly attractive first mate, Riden. Definitely one to add to your TBR if you need more pirates in your life.⠀⠀⠀

Daughter of the Pirate King and Daughter of the Sire Queen surrounded by two bookmarks, fake flowers and paper hearts. The first bookmark says, "I'm not a lady, I'm a pirate!" and the second says, "Oh, the ridiculous things one has to do when one is a pirate."

10 – Oldest book you’ve read?
Does this mean in terms of publishing date? I honestly have no idea. I did an English degree – I had to read all the classics and some olde English so, one of those I guess? Maybe some of The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer.

Cover of In The Quick. It has a pink, cloudy background and an astronaut in the foreground.

11 – Newest book you’ve read?
I am trying to think of the most recent pre-order I’ve read. I read a lot of ‘new’ books. Let’s go with In The Quick by Kate Hope Day, which has the most gorgeous cover. It follows June who has a gift for invention and leaves home to begin astronaut training at the National Space Program. Over time, she gains a post as an engineer on a space station but she can’t stop thinking about Inquiry, a spacecraft powered by her beloved late uncle’s fuel cells. Inquiry went missing when June was twelve years old, and while the rest of the world has moved on, June finds evidence that leads her to believe they are still alive. This book had definitely Sunshine (the Chris Evans movie) vibes and is a relatively short read.

12 – Favourite author?
Too many! Angie Thomas, Kalynn Bayron, Aiden Thomas, Stephanie Garber and so many more authors who have written one book and I’m anxiously awaiting the sequel… I’ve only read one Becky Chambers book so far but I’m adding her to this list too.

13 – Buying books or borrowing books?
Buying! I love having a copy of a book on my bookshelf but borrowing is good for books you don’t care about keeping and is better for your bank balance. Though buying gets me Waterstones points…

14 – A book you dislike that everyone else seems to love?
The Flat Share. I listened to this on audiobook and Carrie Hope Fletcher smashed it but the male narrator was really annoying. I think the way his parts of the book were written added to it. Safe to say, I’m not picking up The Road Trip!

15 – Bookmarks or dog-ears?
BOOKMARKS. WHO EVEN- you know what? Nope, not going there. Bookmarks. Definitely bookmarks.

16 – A book you can always reread?
Red, White and Royal Blue and To Kill A Mockingbird. I also wanted to re-read Cemetery Boys the minute I finished it so that too.

Two books laid out, Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas and Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey Mcquiston, surrounded by paper hearts, wooden stars, pink flowers and pink and white confetti hearts.

17 – Can you read while listening to music?
No, usually I need quiet. The exception is if I’m on the train, then I put my noise cancelling headphones on and listen to music whilst I read.

18 – One POV or multiple POVs?
Both, as long as the multiple POVs are easy to follow and don’t get confusing. I recently read Do You Dream of Terra-Two? which has six POVs and even though I listened to it on audiobook, it was still confusing remembering everyone’s personalities and who they all were. A lot of reviews mention this so I’m glad I wasn’t alone in my thinking.

19 – Do you read a book in one sitting or over multiple days?
Usually over multiple days. Unless it’s super short, or if it’s a book I can’t put down because I NEED to find out what happens.

20 – Who do you tag?
I wasn’t officially tagged in this so I’m just going to go ahead and tag anyone who wants to join in.
